LAKEY PEAK
2009-05-22
A solid Swell was predicted, we decided to make the trip over to Sumbawa to Lakey Peak. Dedi Gun, Rip curls big wave charger here in Indo and Gareth Budge, one of Rythms top free surfers and air specialist were frothing at the thought of perfect waves.
After Budge having to Deal with the police in Bima airport and his wallet being somewhat lighter beacause of an id issue ( ya i know shady character) We got our transport to Lakey and managed to score Indos most cautious driver...This guy seriously was hard on the brakes a Km out from a chicken running accross the road!.....Was painful.
We got to Lakey's to find perfect 4 foot Barrels peeling down both sides of the reef with not too many crew on it. The boys were out there and i was in the boat shooting with perfect Backlit conditions with sic light.
the next few days the predicted 6-8 feet conditions were spot on. We woke to Pumping conditions At the peak. We surfed Periscopes in the mornings and lakey in the afternoon. The boys were scoring epic pits the whole trip.
On the Low tide the swell peaked and Lakey peak was throwing out some huge, heavy, open Barrels for the lucky crew that were there, San Diego, Surfer Nick Jiampa was there making the most of the swell as wel as Jordy Smith, Byron Bartlett and Dion Eiges. These boys as well as dedi Gun and Gareth were the standout surfers by far. The local crew watching were all stoked to see such a hi quality surfing display. Although the locals get to see a lot of pros on a regular basis to rip the perfect waves up that frequent this whole area they were still peaking !!
Dedi and i jumped on a bike to His hometown in Donpu to visit his home and family one day. we pulled in to Donpu, a village in sumbawa an hour from lakey peak to dedis place, a simple house with a thousand kids around and his family made it a very special experience. I documented it for a story on Dedi for Rip curl.
Experiences like these are what a surf trip is all about. The travel, side trips, people are most of what make a surf trip up, too many times you only see the surf which is about 40% of a trip really. you have to take the time to really appreciate where you are and the moment for what it is.....get pumping waves its a bonus..which luckily in Indo is pretty common!
